ADOBE 5.5 initial thoughts….

So we just got our MAC copies of Adobe Master Collection 5.5. I just wanted to share my initial thoughts on the software. We have not played with all the apps but here are some stuff that I noticed right away that Adobe’s site may not mention.
Installation:
This is an upgrade suite from MC CS4 and for Design Standard Suite. The Upgrade came with 3 disks, 2 install disks and 1 goodies disk (which is just fonts). Installation went smooth but here were the problems. If you get a font error when launching after effects about fonts that’s because it is looking for the Verdana Typeface in all its different font styles. Apparently AE uses this for it’s interface. Odd that for the price Adobe did not add the font during the installation. So if you don’t have Verdana you will have to find it. Before you can launch AE.
The problem I had with the install is that it did not uninstall my old CS4 apps. I thought that was a bit of a hassle. So I had to uninstall it manually. But in doing so I think it took some files that Photoshop needed. So before I can continue. I had to re-install Photoshop 5.5. But after all that. It was fine. After registering the update you get some nice freebee’s to chose from like Magic Bullet Quicklooks light, 30 day free trial at lynda.com and others.
I also installed it in my old Aluminum Mac Book Pro. The model right before the unibody. And I was able to edit and playback full 1080 HD over wifi on it. Did some simple cuts and no problems in playback.
Stuff I like:

Big improvement on Premiere. Apple really fucked up with Final Cut Pro X. I might have to switch back to Premiere. It has full support and customization for any codec specially for Apple Pro Rez. I was able to make custom sequences easily. A big plus! I got a nice yellow line for all my HD ProRez files. Go Premiere! I know that you can now natively use any codec mix codec etc. Although this may be good for editorial work, for VFX work it’s best to convert all the files you need to a good lossless codec/compression. Installed Magic Bullet Quicklooks light and Trapcode with no problems.

I also liked Adobe Story for all your scripting need plus the sharing of it remotely to colleagues or clients. Right now it’s in beta and is free. Hope they can keep it as a free service.

Another big improvement is Adobe Media Encoder. The CS4 version was, I felt, to be in its infancy stages. So I did all my conversion with Quicktime Pro (which apple fucked up again with Quicktime X) or Apple Compressor which worked great. Although the new CS5.5 Adobe Media Encoder has many improvements which I think can rival Apple’s Compressor. It now has many options and many custom codec support. Your not locked in the the DV NTSC or DV PAL world. I have not done a full test in terms of doing a batch conversion, maybe next time.

So those are just some stuff that I’ve looked into in the last few hours. Over all so far so good!

Cold Blooded

This piece was part of a group show called “Cold Blooded”, which included and Philippine Graffiti crew KST. I wanted to somehow create digital tags and let people interact with it. I created tags and had the computer create a digital representation of those tags. I used a software called Graffiti Analysis. It a project created by Evan Roth.

Installed an Airconditioner

Ok so finally we got our split type installed yesterday. But I think we got ripped of in terms of the cost for installing. I did most of the work… I installed the unit on the wall, I did all the electrical installation from the circuit breaker to the unit itself…. what did they do? 1 - build a frame, lay down the pipe (which I had to help them measure) ad freon and clean the unit.
It took me (1 person) 3 hours to install the unit on the wall, do all the electrical. It took them (4 people) 7:30 am - 2pm to clean the unit, make the frame, add freon and lay down the pipe.

My ignorance on the freon and welding led to the insane costs.

Note for the future…. it does not take 5 people to install an air conditioner it only takes 2 people that know what they are doing. And if they charge you more the 10K tell them to go and *&(^% their moms!

Motion sketch and Expressions

Props to BKLYN Ind! For this week’s video I went a little deeper with expressions and explaining variables! Also used motion sketch, a very handy tool to use specially with animations. Motion sketch will record in real time your actions in relation to positions. It was a bit late when I made this, hope explanations are clear but again if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask. Effects used: Blur and Echo.

NYC Blizzard Day 2

We decided to walk around the day see the result of the night before. The vibe seems happy but actually the shot with the garbage truck slid back and almost hit a woman crossing. The guys helping the cab driver (the Asian with the light jacket) accused the the guy in the car that he stole the money in the cab.
