ADOBE 5.5 initial thoughts….

So we just got our MAC copies of Adobe Master Collection 5.5. I just wanted to share my initial thoughts on the software. We have not played with all the apps but here are some stuff that I noticed right away that Adobe’s site may not mention.
Installation:
This is an upgrade suite from MC CS4 and for Design Standard Suite. The Upgrade came with 3 disks, 2 install disks and 1 goodies disk (which is just fonts). Installation went smooth but here were the problems. If you get a font error when launching after effects about fonts that’s because it is looking for the Verdana Typeface in all its different font styles. Apparently AE uses this for it’s interface. Odd that for the price Adobe did not add the font during the installation. So if you don’t have Verdana you will have to find it. Before you can launch AE.
The problem I had with the install is that it did not uninstall my old CS4 apps. I thought that was a bit of a hassle. So I had to uninstall it manually. But in doing so I think it took some files that Photoshop needed. So before I can continue. I had to re-install Photoshop 5.5. But after all that. It was fine. After registering the update you get some nice freebee’s to chose from like Magic Bullet Quicklooks light, 30 day free trial at lynda.com and others.
I also installed it in my old Aluminum Mac Book Pro. The model right before the unibody. And I was able to edit and playback full 1080 HD over wifi on it. Did some simple cuts and no problems in playback.
Stuff I like:
Big improvement on Premiere. Apple really fucked up with Final Cut Pro X. I might have to switch back to Premiere. It has full support and customization for any codec specially for Apple Pro Rez. I was able to make custom sequences easily. A big plus! I got a nice yellow line for all my HD ProRez files. Go Premiere! I know that you can now natively use any codec mix codec etc. Although this may be good for editorial work, for VFX work it’s best to convert all the files you need to a good lossless codec/compression. Installed Magic Bullet Quicklooks light and Trapcode with no problems.
I also liked Adobe Story for all your scripting need plus the sharing of it remotely to colleagues or clients. Right now it’s in beta and is free. Hope they can keep it as a free service.
Another big improvement is Adobe Media Encoder. The CS4 version was, I felt, to be in its infancy stages. So I did all my conversion with Quicktime Pro (which apple fucked up again with Quicktime X) or Apple Compressor which worked great. Although the new CS5.5 Adobe Media Encoder has many improvements which I think can rival Apple’s Compressor. It now has many options and many custom codec support. Your not locked in the the DV NTSC or DV PAL world. I have not done a full test in terms of doing a batch conversion, maybe next time.
So those are just some stuff that I’ve looked into in the last few hours. Over all so far so good!
